You have a photo you want to turn into a sticker for a WhatsApp chat. Start in Photos: open the picture, hold its subject and choose Add Sticker. For movement, use a Live Photo and check that its animation is enabled. Then check the result in the app where you plan to send it.
An Apple Live Sticker, a WhatsApp sticker and a Live Photo sent as media are different things. Creating one in Photos does not establish that WhatsApp will preserve every part of it. Choose the result you need before trying a conversion.
Choose the result you want
| Your goal | Start here |
|---|---|
| A cut-out of a person, pet or object | Make a sticker from a photo |
| A moving Apple Live Sticker | Start with a Live Photo |
| A custom sticker inside WhatsApp | Use WhatsApp's sticker tools |
| A moment with movement and sound | Share the Live Photo as media |
Make the sticker in Photos
- Open the photo full screen in Photos.
- Hold the subject, then release it.
- Choose Add Sticker.
- For a Live Photo, check the animation control in the sticker's effects options.
Apple's Photos instructions describe this creation path. You do not need to locate a particular album before opening the photo. Start with a picture whose subject is easy to distinguish from its background.
Find it through the iPhone keyboard
In an app that supports the feature, tap a text field, switch to the emoji keyboard and open its stickers. Select the sticker you created. Apple's keyboard guide explains these controls and how to create another sticker there.
When trying this in WhatsApp, distinguish the iPhone keyboard's sticker collection from WhatsApp's own sticker tray. A sticker missing from one collection is not evidence that its source photo has disappeared. Return to Photos to check what you created, then return to the intended chat.
Use WhatsApp's own sticker tools
WhatsApp also has a custom sticker maker, including photo editing and a sticker tray. If your aim is a WhatsApp sticker, use the controls available in the installed app and check the result there.
This is a separate path from creating an Apple Live Sticker. Start with one photo, inspect the available sticker controls and try one result in a test conversation before organising a larger collection. Do not assume that the two collections share a pack called “Live Stickers”.
When you want movement and sound
A Live Photo can include a short recording around the still image. WhatsApp announced Live Photo sharing with movement and sound. That announcement concerns sharing the photo as media; it does not establish that a sticker created from it has sound.
If the recording itself matters, choose the Live Photo in the media-sharing flow and inspect its preview. Keep the source photo so you can try that path without repeatedly converting or overwriting the sticker. For a customer, choose the form that communicates the information clearly.
If the result is still or missing
The picture does not move in Photos
Check the source before changing anything in WhatsApp. A normal still image is a different starting point from a Live Photo. Open the original, confirm what it contains and compare it with the item you selected for the sticker. This separates a source-selection problem from an app-compatibility question.
The Apple sticker moves, but the WhatsApp result does not
Compare the item in Photos with the item actually inserted in the chat. Check which sticker tray you used and whether you selected a sticker or shared a photo. If movement is essential, try the Live Photo as media. Record which path worked rather than repeating the same conversion with a whole collection.
You cannot find a sticker you just made
Return to the collection where you created it. Check the iPhone keyboard if you used Photos, or WhatsApp's tray if you used its custom maker. Then reopen the intended chat and choose the item from that collection. Check the installed app's help if the controls differ from the descriptions above.
Someone else sees a different result
Ask which item arrived: a still sticker, an animated item or a media attachment. Compare the same item on both devices before changing the source. A screenshot of the chat only shows a frame, so it cannot establish whether an animation played. Use a harmless test picture and check the received item itself.
A simple check before using a sticker with customers
Imagine a shop confirming that an order is ready. A friendly sticker can accompany the reply, but the customer still needs the collection time and place in readable text. Keep the useful information in the message so it survives even if the sticker appears differently.
Try the image with a colleague first. Check that it arrives in the form you intended, that its subject is recognisable at chat size and that it does not hide the next step. Use your own image or one you are allowed to share. Check the background for customer names, addresses or other details before turning it into a reusable sticker.
If several colleagues handle those conversations, explore the Wassenger shared inbox. It gives colleagues a shared place to continue the customer conversation and keep the useful details together.
